سازه های متحرک از درهای سنگی مصر و چین باستان آغاز شده و در سازه های چادری عشایر و ویلاهای رومی و چادرسازی باغ های دوره قاجاریه تجلی یافته. Frei Otto به عنوان اولین معماری که سقف های متحرک پارچه ای را در معماری خود بکار برد شناخته شده، وی یکی از برترین معماران عصر خود بوده که سقف های چادری متحرک را معرفی کرد وی الهام بخش سقف های متحرک کنونی بود.

نمونه اولیه سقف های متحرک مدرن امروزی که با ریموت باز و بست شده برای اولین بار در سال 1963 توسط دیوید میلر کشف شد که البته طرح از 5 سال قبل آماده و تا اجرای کامل اولین سقف متحرک موتوردار 5 سال بطول انجامید. سقف متحرک ابتدا در استادیوم ها بکار گرفته شد.
